Santa Monica Student Catwalk Is Going Full Metal

With only 5 full days left to complete looks for 4 different collections, the Santa Monica TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy students are putting the finishing touches on every aspect of their Student Catwalk taking place this weekend. From hair and makeup looks, wardrobe and models to lights and music, the students are designing the entire showcase from top to bottom.

This year’s event revolves around the theme of metallics, which the Academy has titled “Alchemy: The magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.” Inspired by the 2016 Met Gala theme “Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology” and the fashion that emerged from this iconic celebration of fashion, the Catwalk will highlight metallics in each collection.

The Academy students divided into 4 groups to create looks based on their interpretation of the overall theme of alchemy.

The first of these groups, named “The Chromatics” has created a collection based on the seven basic metals used traditionally in alchemy. The students drew their inspiration from the qualities of each metal to create looks for their portion of the Catwalk. The looks will incorporate a juxtaposition of architectural versus soft elements with geometrical details and armor to further drive the theme home.

The next group, titled “Le’Khemia” after the Greek root word for alchemy aimed to design a collection of looks with a more literal take on the metallic theme. To do this, the team created a transformative progression in their collection starting with looks representing the most unpolished metals to the most polished. The team leader, Aaron, describes this thematic element as a “rags to riches” transformation. The final look of the collection will depict the metamorphosis from charcoal to diamond for a sparkling finale.

Another group called their team “Breaking Bad” and will interpret the theme of alchemy with a story approach to create an image of immortality. The group wanted to use the idea that immortality violates the natural law stating that all living things must die by creating a progressive display beginning with more ordinary looks and gradually becoming more avant garde. The looks will intensify as the collection moves from model to model. Each model will also represent a different base level. The final look, which is their avant garde piece will represent perfection to symbolize the highest imaginable quality of metal and the idea of immortality.

Last but certainly not least is a group who chose the name “The Full Metal Alchemist” for their collection. The group strives to emphasize the importance of metallics in current fashion and trends through the looks they create for the Student Catwalk. In contrast to some of the other groups that will be showing their collections at the event, this group chose not to design their showcase in a “chain reaction” format. Instead, each of their looks will be vastly different while each incorporating characteristics of TONI&GUY and themselves in their creations. The collection will feature glitter and different metallic elements, including chainmail.

Santa Monica TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy director Ashley Berryhill explained that the overall theme was chosen, not only from their Met Gala inspiration, but also because of the relevance and timelessness of metallics and how that is mirrored by the TONI&GUY brand.

“Metallics are classic and they never go away, and that’s kind of the way our hairdressing is,” said Berryhill.

The Santa Monica Student Catwalk will take place Sunday, July 24th at The Well in Los Angeles. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour. The runway show will start at 7 p.m. with an after party to follow. Donations for this event will go toward the Back To Beauty fundraiser.
