TONI&GUY Partners With a New Kind of Cause

Within the TONI&GUY family, we believe in standing for worthy causes. This past Saturday the Santa Monica TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy partnered with an event to promote women’s empowerment and raise awareness about victim blaming and body shaming. The event, which has been named the Amber Rose SlutWalk was founded by model Amber Rose. It was held in Pershing Square and the surrounding streets in Downtown Los Angeles. This was the second year of this event which was created to honor all women who have been judged and demeaned for their sexual behavior, according to Rose’s Wikipedia page.

Our students played a large role in the event. They arrived in the early morning to prep models and dancers for the event with hair and makeup. Dozens of students gathered backstage where they created full hair and makeup looks for each of the models, dancers, performers and a variety of other participants at SlutWalk. The looks the students created featured bold makeup with deeply hued lips and precise eyeliner, high half ponytails and statement-making braids.

The event began with a walk that started a few blocks from Pershing Square. Participants gathered earlier in the morning to make signs to display during the walk declaring empowering, body positive statements. Event goers walked the two blocks to the main event led by Rose and her entourage. With that, the mainstage event kicked off with music, dance, and spoken word performances co-hosted by Perez Hilton, American Idol’s Frenchie Davis and social media star Joanne the Scammer. The event also included a fashion show featuring looks from designers in support of the SlutWalk message including Rose’s own line, Woman’s Touch Apparel, Anya Lust and Angel Brinks Fashion Leggings.

While all of this was going on the academy students were hosting a braid bar and providing complimentary braided hairstyles for interested attendees. They created a variety of hairstyles from a full head of cornrows to classic dutch braids, to a simple hairline plait. With the the intense heat and bright sun unshielded by clouds, the braids were a welcome edition to their looks and the perfect cool down style.

It was great to see our students doing what they do best and helping out with a cause that supports important issues and women’s equality. It was an honor to partner with the Amber Rose SlutWalk and give our students further opportunity to practice their craft and work in a setting beyond the salon floor.
